Plea deals explored in Wilson hazing case | Buffalo News Newspaper | Find Articles at BNET
As crunch time approaches in the Wilson High School baseball hazing case, plea negotiations are heating up.

One of the teenage defendants was ready to enter a guilty plea Tuesday in Town Court, but Assistant District Attorney Robert A. Zucco asked for a delay so all three former varsity players might be able to plead guilty at once.
The cases were adjourned until June 9, but Zucco said later that he's not certain a plea deal will come off.
"It's not a complete package yet," Zucco said. "I'm not sure what will happen."
"If we don't have an agreeable disposition at that time, we'll definitely have to have a trial," said Town Justice George R. Berger. The trial is tentatively set to begin June 20.

Defense attorney Mark Guglielmi, who represents a 19-year-old Wilson graduate who was among three players charged in the April 17, 2008, incident, said his client wants to make a deal.
authentic Stan Musial jersey Cream /> "His story hasn't changed from Day One. If his facts can fit into a authentic Lou Brock jersey Blue plea, we'd be interested in taking it," Guglielmi said. "He'd like to put it behind him."
P. Andrew Vona, attorney for one of two 18-year-old defendants, told reporters, "If the right plea comes along, we'll take it. They've known all along what an acceptable plea would be."
In Vona's view, that would be a violation "at most," a charge such as harassment.
"At this point in time, we haven't heard anything that is acceptable," Vona said.
None of the attorneys would say what plea offers are on the table.
Guglielmi asked Berger for a sentencing commitment before the plea, but Berger  said he didn't want to get involved in the plea talks until a deal was done.
Zucco said, "Part of the resolution we're discussing is a [sentencing] recommendation from the people."
Berger said, "Until I see what the sentencing recommendation is, I can't say whether I'd commit to it."
Vona said he doesn't intend to get hung up on sentencing. "I'm not real worried about sentencing on a harassment [for a defendant] with no priors," he said.
The maximum sentence for a violation is Vince Coleman official jersey 15 days in jail. Other typical sentences are a small fine or a conditional discharge.
The three players are charged with first- and second-degree hazing and forcible touching. The 19-year-old also is charged with endangering authentic Lou Brock jersey Cream the welfare of a child. All the charges are misdemeanors except for second-degree hazing, a violation.
The Buffalo News is not publishing the names of the defendants because, no matter what charges Tim McCarver official jersey they plead guilty to or are convicted of, youthful offender status is mandatory.
Berger said because the cases would be sealed, he would accept any guilty pleas in his Stan Musial official jersey chambers rather than in the open courtroom.
Meanwhile, the State Police confirmed that an internal affairs investigation has been opened into how the Wilson case was handled.
"Allegations of improper police action were made," said Lt. Glenn Miner, public information officer at the Albany headquarters of the State authentic Tim McCarver jersey White Police.
He said the probe was "fairly recent," but didn't know how long it would take. Nor would be disclose exactly what the issue is, and he said he didn't know where the complaint came from.
The attorneys for the former varsity baseball coaches, Thomas J. Baia and William M. Atlas, carried out their own investigation, but the lawyers said they knew nothing of the State Police probe.
"We had private investigators, absolutely," said Robert Viola, Baia's attorney. "I'm not going to comment Matt Holliday official jersey on what we found. Let's just say I know nothing about this investigation and its genesis."
Neither did Wilson School Superintendent Michael Wendt authentic Matt Holliday jersey White or Donald Palacios of the Wilson authentic Tim McCarver jersey Cream "Support Our Schools" group.

AACS lets baseball finals bid slip away | Maryland Gazette | Find Articles at BNET
Quakers snatch title berth from Eagles

BALTIMORE - Will Poulakos dove headfirst into third base, letting out a cathartic scream of joy after his go-ahead, two-run triple.
But after he took the mound in relief, Poulakos, and the rest of his teammates' emotions turned to the polar opposite.
After putting Annapolis Area Christian School Justin Morneau official jersey ahead, 7-5, in the sixth inning of Monday's Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Joe Nathan official jersey Conference baseball playoff elimination game, Poulakos yielded three unearned runs to Friends School, and the Quakers held on for an 8-7 victory.
"Going in, I felt like I had them, especially after hitting that triple," authentic Justin Morneau jersey Grey Poulakos said. "I guess it just wasn't meant to be."

The Eagles (14-9) made three errors in the bottom of the replica Justin Morneau jersey Red sixth, allowing the tying runs authentic Justin Morneau jersey Blue to score and extending the inning for cleanup hitter Kelly Dayton.
The slugger responded with a hit to left that drove in his third run of the game.
"That's why he's No. 4," Friends coach Thomas Randall said. "We knew we could come back because we've done it before. This is a veteran team."
Despite leading until the fifth inning, the Eagles' defense couldn't maintain a firm grip on the ball. The team committed eight errors, including three that led to a run in the fourth and another that gave the Quakers (18-3) a chance to plate the tying run in the fifth.
"Errors kind of gave it away," AACS coach Talbot Watkins said. "Those were the games we lost this year, when we let down on our defense."
The Eagles fell to the Quakers in the opening game of the double- elimination tournament, and they dropped the two regular-season meetings as well.
But AACS came out with the gusto and Kent Hrbek official jersey energy of a team that looked primed for a spot in the league finals.
authentic Justin Morneau jersey Cream /> Andy Stallings' RBI single in the first, Lane Farmer's run- scoring triple in the second and Poulakos' sacrifice fly in the third, coupled with an error that allowed a run to score, gave starting pitcher Aaron Marshall a four-run cushion.

The Quakers broke authentic Joe Nathan jersey Cream through in their half of the third, plating two, two-out runs on Dayton's triple replica Kent Hrbek jersey Blue to deep left. After scratching across a run on a double play in the fourth, the hosts tied the game on a pair of RBI singles by Austin Lasky and Matt Vaselkiv.
"Once the momentum started, I didn't know it was in the bag, but I knew we had a good shot at bringing it home," Randall said.
The Eagles rallied with two outs in the sixth to take the lead. Marshall and Jon Lentz hit consecutive singles, and each advanced a base on winning pitcher Wick Eisenberg's wild pitch.
Poulakos then stepped to the plate and unleashed a majestic shot to deep left. The only thing stopping the blast from becoming a three-run Kirby Puckett official jersey home run was the lack of an outfield fence.
"They were pounding me outside, but I finally got a pitch I could handle," Poulakos said. "It was right in my zone. I just nailed it. It felt really good off the bat."
Dan Beall led off the Eagles' half of the seventh with a double. But pinch-hitter Tony Villafane bunted foul for a third strike, Beall was caught stealing after taking off on a pitch in the dirt and FX Graham struck out to end the Eagles' shot at a championship.
The Quakers advanced to the MIAA B Conference finals, held at Ripken Stadium in Aberdeen, where they'll face top-seed Lutheran, which hasn't lost yet in the tournament. Friends will need two wins, while Lutheran only needs one, to secure the league title.
